The hybrid powertrain in a Prius won't help much if the task is moving tons of refuse. That's not to say hybrid technology has no role in heavy equipment. There is a great deal of research aimed at applying hybrid techniques in big trucks and utility vehicles. But the advanced powertrains for such equipment will look a lot different than those of passenger hybrids now on the road.
