Abstract
Gravitational collapse of orogenic belts is one of major tectonic processes re-shaping continental lithosphere. Thermal-mechanical evolution of syn- and post-orogenic extension is investigated in this study. The results indicate that crustal collapse of the Cordilleran orogen may account for the formation of most metamorphic core complexes, but it is unlikely to have been the major cause of Basin and Range extension, which requires an active mantle upwelling. Mantle upwelling under the Basin and Range province may have induced ductile deformation within the lithosphere around its margins; the resultant lithospheric structure is consistent with that observed under the Sierra Nevada. Crustal deformation during syn-orogenic extension is simulated in finite element models. The results show that two sets of normal faulting, one parallel and one perpendicular to the direction of regional compression as observed in the Tibetan Plateau and the High Andes, can be produced with different tectonic boundary conditions.
