Abstract
This study was designed to determine if patterns of child temperament and parent's parenting style could be identified in a population of 4 to 7 year old boys identified with emotional and behavioral disorders, using existing temperament and parenting style questionnaires. Using the diathesis-stress model (Martin, 1994) to explain the relationship between a child's temperament and school difficulties, this study attempted to examine temperament as a predispositional risk and parenting style as an environmental event which increases or decreases the occurrence of behavioral problems. Twenty-two 4 to 7 year old boys with emotional and behavioral disorders, and their mothers were the subjects of this study. Parents and teachers completed the Behavioral Style Questionnaire (BSQ) developed by McDevitt and Carey, 1978. Mothers of the research subjects completed the revised Parent Authority Questionnaire (PAQ), developed by Buri, in 1989. Individual temperament scores were computed and subjects were classified into diagnostic clusters or categories of temperament. Individual parenting styles were calculated and counted. The research findings did not establish any patterns of child temperament based on the diagnostic categories established by the BSQ. Parent and teacher ratings of child temperament did reveal a specific pattern of temperament traits in this group of subjects, which may have implications for program planning for parents and their children. Mother's ratings of their parenting style did not support the research hypothesis related to parenting style, and this negated any attempt to apply the diathesis-stress model to this population of subjects. The results demonstrated that patterns of temperament traits can be identified in groups of subjects using the BSQ, and that parents and teachers ratings of child temperament are similar. The results of this study did not support established diagnostic clusters of temperament as a good measure of behavior problems in 4 to 7 year old boys with emotional and behavioral disorders. Finally, the majority of parents participating in this study perceived themselves as being authoritative in their parenting style, as determined by the PAQ.
