A detailed view of three varied companies in sizes and industry is used to show the flexibility of lean. Nummi, an auto manufacturer, uses concepts like kanban and point of use to create a defined flow. Harris Communications, a computer networking hardware manufacturer, has used an event called a Kaizen Blitz to apply lean improvements with impressive results. The Boeing Company, the world's largest aerospace company, has used Accelerated Improvement Workshops to educate and implement the Boeing Production System at sites from commercial airplanes, to military transports, to expendable launch systems. The proper implementation of lean techniques can lead to improved quality, resulting in reduced cycle time and less Work In Process.
