Abstract
Previous work in the field of probabilistic analysis has focused largely on the development of methodology to determine the probability of structural performance failure. This research effort addresses the practical application of reliability theory to geotechnical problems, specifically slope stability evaluation. Several methods of probabilistic analysis are discussed and compared to closed-form solutions using the infinite and Cullman slope models. Based on these analyses, a methodology for treating slope stability problems is presented and applied to two case studies, (1) the embankment slopes of an oil reservoir facility in Venezuela, and (2) slope sections of a copper pit mine in Chile. Analysis results indicate that probabilistic evaluation of slope stability problems provides an explicit and quantitative measure of structural reliability that compares favorably with field observations for the two case studies.
