Abstract
The relationship between parenting styles and student achievement and underachievement was studied using a sample of 132 upper-middle class parents (126 mothers, 6 fathers) of elementary age children. Subjects completed a modification of Dornbusch's Parent Child-Rearing Questionnaire, and the Children's Achievement Rating Scale which was based on school grades, and parental subjective estimates of underachievement. Results confirmed previous findings of a positive correlation between the Authoritative parenting style and achievement. The study found a negative correlation between the Excessive Expectations parenting style and the Overprotective parenting style and achievement. A positive correlation was found between the Authoritarian, Excessive Expectations, Powerless, and Overprotective parenting styles and underachievement. Affection and Calmness dimensions correlated negatively with underachievement. A combined measure of Effective parenting style correlated negatively with underachievement. A combined measure of Ineffective parenting style correlated negatively with achievement and positively with underachievement. Implications of the findings for parent education are discussed.
