This study explores the use of art therapy to enhance the social skills of latency aged children who have a learning disability or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. The group art tasks allow the latency aged child to practice social skills and to explore his/her role in social situations. This quasi-experimental study traces the progress of five latency aged children with various learning difficulties over a 16 week period using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Quantitative data from teachers and parents is presented. A childhood ADHD Rating Scale (Schroeder & Gordon, 1991) yields quantitative data that is charted. Resulting data from teachers, parents, and the children indicates improvement in all four areas studied: following directions, making decisions, forming friendships, and waiting turns. |
