Isi artikelCommonly, classroom interaction is conceived of as a waystation lying somewhere between the formal curriculum and the intended learning outcomes. Language learning is treated as an individual accomplishment, albeit one which takes place in a social environment. With few exceptions (e.g., Trueba, Guthrie and Au, 1981), second language learning is seen as a psychological phenomenon rather than a sociocultural one. In this paper, I hope to illustrate the necessity of viewing formal language instruction in terms of both intercultural and intracultural encounters as well.
