Isi artikelA genre analysis of 284 essay examination prompts reveals specific discoursal characteristics which function to communicate what type of response will be considered legitimate. The main pedagogical implication is that for test takers to the able to decode prompts, they must draw upon the same functional/linguistic knowledge of genre that the test constructor did. This suggests that academic writing teachers should familiarize their students with the discoursal characteristics of examination prompts.
