The discovery of the association between choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with higher intraocular levels of vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) has yielded new agents for tackling this disease. Pagaptanid, an anti-VEGF, is the first agent to be approved. Clinical trials have demonstrated pegaptanib to be a safe and effective treatment.
