Isi artikel
The objective of this paper is to share a discussion framework that can be used to see if what is happening to the local ("regional") languages in Indonesia can be predicted, that is, whether they are experiencing language shift or language maintenance. Inferences are drawn from the findings of research studies on the use of the Lampung language (a minor language), Balinese, Banjarese, and Javanese (a major language), all of which suggest that the use of the local language correlates with age: the younger the speaker, the less it is used and, by the same toke, the more the national language (Indonesian) is spoken. Some concepts used in the discussion; which converges on the assumption that the local language is losing ground in the competition with the national language, include those of geolinguistic and ethnolinguistic vitality and diglossia leakage. Fishman's theory of reversing language shift ("graded inter-generational dislocational scales") is highlighted.
