Isi artikelPossessive nouns are unmarked peripherals but can function as antecedents for cross reference clitics. The degree of inalienable possession is very weak due to fact that the interrelations among the elements are associative in nature. On the other hand, alienable possessions are very strong in the sense that one element is possessed by another. Syntactically possessive constructions can also be of the Diathesis Objective or Diathesis Agentive types. The possessor and the possessed elements are determined by the pivots of the two types. Expressions with possessive nuances tend to be avoided by Balinese speakers coming from one village. In their view, possessiveness is not individual but communal and has social functions.
