The mission of a higher learning institution is to participate in the promotion for the intelligent life of the nation - intelligent life being defined as an activity that colors and influences human existence. Meanwhile, there are activities which humans do consciously know as culture. It can be clearly seen, therefore, that there is a close relationship between the mission of a higher learning institution and the role of culture - which in our case, of course, Indonesian culture. The cultural aspect is itself not easy to understand; some even question whether or not there is such thing as Indonesian culture. This paper is first to discuss the concept of culture in general and its implementation in the Indonesian context, and secondly its role in the education of the Indonesian nation through institutions of higher learning.
