The importance of good and effective Supervisory Boards (Dewan Komisaris) to improve Good Corporate Governance in Indonesia is increasingly being recognized. This paper provides a concise, normative summary of the most important factors in developing effective Supervisory Boards. It is based mostly on experience of the author as a member of several supervisory boards,as well as board committees in both state owned and private enterprise. The paper discusses the role and tasks of supervisory boards, recruitment and orientation of board members, size and composition of the board, and board process. It ends the discussion with how supervisory boards should be organized to maintain its dependent role as a supervisory, monitoring, and control body within a company.
