Isi artikel
Progesterone levels rise during pregnancy, starting from embryo implantation until 32nd week of gestational. The metabolic effect of progesterone is associated with gestational diabetes, his been primaly attributed to its negative effects on insulin sensitivy. Since progesterone receptors (PR) were identified in beta cells of pancreas, progestrone segnaling was studied, to explain it effect on insulin regulation and glucose metabolism. More recently, progesterone effect was time dependent; acute progesterone treatment can enhance insulin secretion to adapt for the decrease in insulin sensitivity. However, beta cell function and GLUT4 expression appears to be reduced on chronic exposure to progesterone in vivo.
