Isi artikelToward the end of May this year, commemorative events were held in Uppsala (Sweden) and at the Linnean Society of London to mark the three-hundredth anniversary of the birth of the eighteenth-century Swedish naturalist Carl von Linne (Linnaeus). Linne established the Latin binomial system of scientific nomenclature for plants and animals commonly used in the world today, thereby laying the foundations for modern taxonomy and biology. The Emperor attended events in both places at the invitation of the Linnean Society of Lojdon and the Swedish and British governments, and on May 29 he delivered the keynote speech, titled, "Linne and Taxonomy in Japan: On the 300th Anniversary of his Birth," at a special anniversary meeting of the Linnean Society of London.
