Isi artikelThe words to describe a mentor have included teacher, supporter, guide, master, and friend. Words used to describe the learner in the mentoringrelationship include student, apprentice, subordinate, and prodigy (Gingerich & Ondeck, 1994). These words convey a relationship or bond that transcends age and time and that is a natural outgrowth of education or work associations. Although mentors are sometimes found in family and relatives, most mentoringrelationships occur within our professional lives. Historically, these connections occurred in a natural manner, possibly as an outgrowth of a teacher-student relationship or a supervisor-employee relationship. Gingerich and Ondeck (1994) wrote about this type of mentoringrelationship from both the learner and the mentor perspective. The need for objectivity and generous sharingof knowledge, respect, and time are also important ingredients in the mentoring relationship as described in the article.
