Isi artikelAs we know, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services was required to implement the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996. That means that national standards must be put into place relative to the electronic transactions of an individual’s health care information. We entered 2002 with the expectation that these standards must be in place for large providers and health plans covered by the act by October 16, 2002. We were unsure as to what data and what modes of transactions were covered and how our information systemproviders would meet this deadline. It appears that others beyond home health and hospice care providers and computerization systems also had concerns because Congress authorized an extension of this deadline to October 16, 2003. The HIPAA Administrative Simplification Compliance Act (ASCA), which was enacted in December 2001, provided this extension. During the interim, sample plans were to be provided to the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics to review for identification of common problems. During the time until October 2003, it is anticipated that periodic recommendations for solving problems identified will be transmitted to covered organizations. This extension is not a blanket extension proffered to every provider but, rather, is extended to those covered entities that obtain the extension, prior to October 15, 2002.
