Isi artikelIdeally, clinical practice should be evidence based and should foster the most positive outcomes that are feasible for the particular patient situation. Often I hear the remark from advanced practice nurses (APNs) that they are “too busy practicing to be involved in research.” What they are not acknowledging is that their practice is their research. Comparing their practice with established benchmarks or goals they have set for their practice is a vital component of advanced practice in health care today. With the current nursing shortage and the managed care environment, only roles that have a positive influence on quality and cost-effectiveness can be defended and afford to be continued in any clinical setting. Therefore, clinicians must demonstrate that they and/or their programs make a difference and document their value for the population being served to administrators and third-party payers.
