Isi artikelInfluenza (flu) viruses are contagious and are spread from person to person. Because the flu is a virus, antibiotics (such as penicillin) are not effective in treating it. The rates of serious illness and death from flu are highest among persons aged 65 years and older and persons of any age who have medical conditions that place them at increased risk for complications from flu (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2002a, 2002b). The flu vaccination (flu shot) is the primary method for preventing the flu and its severe complications.
