Parish nursing is a program that provides community health services within a particular religious- affiliated congregation. The holistic goals of parish nursing span physical, emotional, and spiritual health and well-being. The parish nurse may have many roles, depending on the needs of individuals and the congregation at large. The parish nurse may make the actual visits to parishioners in the home, hospital, or skilled nursing facility; may educate volunteers to make visits; and may act as a liaison with community agencies. Based on a health needs assessment, the parish nurse may provide or facilitate health education and screening sessions to promote wellness within the total congregation.
