Isi artikelIt has long been a myth of management that being a manager is a lonely position. We have been taught that managers must separate themselves from those whom they supervise—that we cannot afford to get too close to our subordinates lest we lose control of those same subordinates. Traditionally, managers were expected to be cool and aloof and to maintain a tacit, but nevertheless very real, barrier between management and workers. Some managers feel that they must draw a line in the sand to protect themselves from unintended, inappropriate influence from their staff members. They may also be afraid that they won’t be able to make difficult, unpopular decisions if they are too close to their people.
