Human resource management has taken on new meaning and new implications in the world of scrutiny and oversight by the Office of the Inspector General and its emphasis on Medicare/ Medicaid fraud and abuse. Background checks, verification of education, validation of credentials, confirmation of work history, and authentication of identity have become inherent in any human resource screening process. In addition to authentication of information submitted by the applicant, there is the expectation that the organization will access the Office of the Inspector General’s online database, List of Excluded Individuals/ Entities (LEIE), prior to employment and at planned intervals throughout the individual’s employment. Once the process for accessing the database is put into place, the next step in the process is developing a protocol for actions to be taken based on the findings.
