The Group Health Association of America and the American Medical Care and Review Association joined together in 1979 to establish accreditation standards for prepaid health plans. Concurrently, the Office of Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) developed quality assurance strategies for HMOs, and from these events arose the development of the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA).
