How often have you heard a coworker say—or have said yourself—that you could “get something done around here if there just weren’t so many meetings”? We all know that meetings take time we could be using to do what we are paid for—working. You are a rare manager or worker if you do not sometimes get frustrated by the time spent in meetings and the ineffectiveness of most of them. Surveys have shown that meetings account for, or are perceived to account for, the greatest amount of unproductive time on the job—even greater than telephone calls, paperwork, travel, and office gossip. The same surveys showed that the average manager spends 10 hours a week in meetings
