Studies are often replicated to increase the generalizability of results and further test the method or intervention. When replication involves studies with populations in different cultures, a great deal of planning must take place before the study is implemented. The extensive planning is driven by the desire to be culturally sensitive and to ensure that the design of the study is credible with the new population and international setting. Not every study can be replicated automatically with another subject population, whether it is a different population regarding disease entity or a different culture. Some of the same issues must be considered when replicating a study with a different ethnic group within the United States, but the discussion in this article will focus on international studies.
