This study analyses the way in which Kotodamaism affects news coverage in Japan. The Japanese traditional concept of ‘Kotodamaism’ is an ancient Japanese belief. While Kotodamaism has been mainly discussed in the context of Japanese history and religion, few studies of the relationship between Kotodamaism and Japanese media and the public have been performed. Izawa (1995), however, researched Kotodamaism from a sociological and psychological point of view and proposed that Japanese people, including politicians, journalists and the public in general, are still unconsciously influenced by the notion of Kotodamaism.
