As telexes play an increasingly important part in communication at sea, the maritime radio service requires specialists who can read and write in English appropriate to the varied demands of traffic related to the setting-up and maintenance of the telex service itself, as well as telex messages concerning the wider demands of maritime radio communication. This paper exemplifies and analyses four main categories of such traffic, to show that this is not as clearly defined a field as might be supposed, and draws conclusions relevant to courses in Maritime English.
