Isi artikel
When we take a close look at the new version of the Indonesian Code of Medical Ethics, there is a very subtle modification with great consequences. While the old version (1993) explicitly warned against the interference of personal interests in medical decision-making, the new version (2002) skipped this caveat. This elimination might further encourage physicians to have considerations of personal profit influencing their medical decisions, thus violating the fiduciary duty of the medical profession. The aim of this paper is to argue in favor of reintroducing the caveat against the interference of personal interests in medical decision-making in the Indonesian Code of Medical Ethics. We will defend the thesis that it is not ethical for physicians to let considerations of personal profit influence their medical decisions. Furthermore, we will argue that this normative view should be explicitly acknowledged in the Indonesian Code of Medical Ethics. Having such an acknowledgement in the code of ethics will further encourage the medical profession to maintain its professional independence.
