Historians generally limit the Enlightment to the period 1680-1800. A census taken in 1809 revealed that the Dutch Republic at that time had a population of two million, two hundred and five thousand, of which 55% were Reformed, 38% Catholics, 3% Lutherans, 2% "Israelites" and 1,5 % Mennonites.
