Isi artikelBovell illustrates how Daniel Dennett's recent book, Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon, argues for two specific theses: religion is game for scientific investigation, and there are indications from research already conducted that religion is in large measure a natural phenomenon. Dennett applies cognitive science to religion, an important premise is that the advent of religion can be completely accounted for in naturalistic terms on the basis of various evolutionary developments that have taken place in the human brain over the course of humankind's evolutionary history. Moreover, he reasons that if evolution can satisfactorily account for even this level of sophistication in the establishment of a species' reproductive success, then surely it can shed some light on the origins and development of human activity, religion.
