Isi artikelCatechesis has failed to accentuate the relevance of the liturgical and sacramental life for Melanesian people, and has thus failed to capture their imagination. So argues Rose Mary Harbinson in Eucharist: A Sacrament of Reconciliation in a Melanesian Context Part I. The catechesis of the early missionaries with its fixed European, pedagogic structure did not incorporate the ancestral symbols which interpret life and its mystery. For a people so immersed in community symbolic exchange, catechesis remains largely outside the realm of their life experience. Christian beliefs, therefore, have remained superficial, and many Melanesians still do not have a sense of belonging to a larger Church. Harbinson also highlights key pastoral issues that affect the life of a young Pacific Christian community.
