Isi artikelYou cannot judge a book by its cover, and you cannot judge a study by its reported findings! Health educators must look deeper than the claims. We must know how to examine the components and structure of a study as well as its findings and how they are presented. Clients and colleagues depend on us to critically appraise research articles or popular press articles reporting research findings. We modify what we think and the advice we give based on this critical analysis. For this “How to Read A Research Article” tool, we updated a teaching device developed by Dr. David D. Rutstein (published in a chapter titled “Critical Reading of the Medical Literature” in Statistics in Medicine by T. Colton in 1974). Then we spiced it up with statistical insights from a text by Mark Kittleson of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and ran it by epidemiologist Nancy Genatt, MPH. Consider the following factors as you read a peer- reviewed scientific article or an article from the popular press reporting on a scientific study. Certainly, there may be other issues to consider, but this is a good place to start. Look carefully. What is being said, misstated or, even, left unsaid?
