The emotional issue of protecting Chinese sovereignty exploded within the newly opened political arenasat the end of the Qing dynasty. From 1904 to 1911, both officials and reform-minded elites established Chinese companies to forestall foreign construction and investment. Urban gentry, merchants, educators, students, and journalists joined in demonstrations against a foreign presence in China and in protestso ver national humiliation. Movementsto recover and protect railway rightsaris ing in thismilieu combined patriotic, participatory, and developmental goalsthat challenged state authority and contributed to revolution in 1911.
