In this article, I attempt to initiate an exploration into the experiences and motivations that lead Internet users either to get involved or to stay away from forms of virtual togetherness. I believe it is important to understand what kinds of needs and values virtual communities serve, and under what circumstances. This will open a realistic perspective on the significance of this type of use in the social shaping of the Internet.
