Studies of the Chinese Communist revolution usually focus on the areas where the revolution was most dramatic or successful, such as South China (e.g., Mao’s Autumn Harvest Uprising in Hunan and his bases in Jiangxi and Fujian, as well as Peng Pai’s Hailufeng peasant movement in Guangdong) before theWar of Resistance against Japan and North China during theWar of Resistance and the civil war. Few serious studies have been done on the revolution in the Yangzi delta. 1 The reason for this is not difficult to discern. Although the Communists spared no effort and energy in making revolution in this area before and during the war, their operations never scored a major success. The Yangzi delta thus did not play a significant role in the revolution.
