Isi artikelThe critique of enlightenment and modernity so prominent in postmodern and postcolonial theories turns, in part, on the assumption that an intrinsic relationship links the intellectual structures of the enlightenment to the institutions of modernity.1 Applied to China, however, this critique often stumbles when it encounters the complex, idiosyncratic forms through which the ideals and goals of both enlightenment and modernity have been expressed. For modern China, the answer to the question, “What is Enlightenment?” reflects the exigencies of its specific history as a nation. If a common thread can be found, it probably lies in the tendency among Chinese intellectuals to think of enlightenment as an intellectual stance, which through the exercise of critical reason, can move the development of the nation and individuals toward desired goals.
