Isi artikelIf there was one event in the late 1930s that united the citizens of Shanghai foreigner or Chinese, rich or poor, Guomindang or Communist it was the seemingly endless demand of refugee relief. Nationality and political affiliation mattered little as those who had provided for those who did not. When the Japanese attacked Shanghai in August 1937, temples, schools, and native place associations opened their doors to welcome the homeless; benefits and fundraising events were held to collect money for food and medicine; and people gave freely of their time to help where needed. When fighting subsided during the fall, refugees who were able returned to their homes while the homeless settled down to life in the camps. These displaced people, particularly the young adults among them, became ready targets for Chinese Communist Party (CCP) mobilizing.
