Isi artikelAnalogously to the definition of shear introduced by Jaeger we introduce and examine the concept of Jaeger shearing. It depends upon just one direction, whereas shearing in the sense of Cauchy depends upon two directions. It is shown that the Jaeger shearing corresponding to the direction n of a material line element at a particle P at a specific time t, may be interpreted as the orthogonal shearing, in the sense of Cauchy, of a pair of orthogonal material line elements, at P at time t, one element being along n and the other along a (generally) unique direction orthogonal to n. It is seen that the maximum Jaeger shearing corresponding to the direction n of a material line element at a point P at a specific time t, may be interpreted as the orthogonal shearing, in the sense of Cauchy of a pair of orthogonal material line elements, at P at time t, one element being along n and the other along a (generally) unique direction orthogonal to n. It is seen that the maximum Jaeger shearing at P at time t is also the maximum Cauchy shearing at P at time t.
