The aim of this article is to explore four books that seek to, if not reclaim a notion of matter from cultural domains, then at least to extend cultural analyses to consider matter in its own right. The review will contemplate specific conceptualizations of matter, known alternately as ‘new materialism’ or ‘neo-materialism’ and its relationship to feminist theory.1 I will argue, with the authors that I review here, that new materialism offers very useful ways of analysing feminist concerns such as sexual difference, and secondly, that new materialism challenges the very purview of feminist theory beyond ‘women’ and sexual difference.
