Isi artikelThe researcher implemented empirically an abstraction concept which is a vertical reorganizational activity of the previously-constructed mathematical concept in order to yield a new mathematical structure based on Indonesian social and cultural backgrounds. The employed activities were to recognize, cluster and construct (squares). The context of the research was the social background of a Junior High School student in dealing with connections among squares. The researcher identified the abstraction profile of a nineth grade student offunior High School named Prakasita in constructing relations among squares. The researcher designed an interview which encouraged the student to use the previous abstraction results in order to contruct new knowledge. The student was given a question which was then expanded based on the answer to the question by employing the keyword ‘what, ‘how ‘or ‘why’. The research results showed that the student Prakasita used abstraction to recognize the characteristics and definition of a square, to cluster the characteristics of two different shapes and to construct networks among squares.
