Isi artikelThis research aimed to explore study/career decision-making preparation of the first semester students of Sonata Dharma University in the academic year 2006/2007 and the roles of guidance teachers/school counselors and of parents in assisting students in their study/career decision-making preparation. To collect data, the researcher designed and distributed a questionnaire based on the theory of career decision-making and of Parson c Traits-Factors (T-F) Approach. The researcher used descriptive statistics to find out detailed phenomena of the experience of study/career decision-making preparation and its root factors, including the frequency distribution, mean, and cross tabulation. The results showed that (I) the respondents’ study/career preparation was superficial, (2) the school counselor c role in previous education level (high school) in assisting study/career decision-making was also superficial, (3) the parent ~ role in the assisting process was relatively signjficant, (4) the study choice related to the first semester students ‘satisfaction revealed a weak connection with study program alternatives and with the school counselor - and parent ~ role in assisting study/ career preparation, (5) the intensity of school counselor :~ role had a very weak link with a school identity and with components of guidance and counseling program management. Based on the findings, the researcher would recommend: (1) provision of career reorientation program for students in higher education, (2) information dissemination on career development and career decision-making principles for parents, and (3) further research to investigate factors affecting the quality of the school counselor c role in assisting students to prepare their careers.
