This article seeks to debunk a few of these myths that have grown into a powerful orthodoxy which has dominated the debate on the question of European policy, and the perceived threat of European-level regulation to national systems of broadcasting. It argues that the Commission has a far more sophisticated and sympathetic approach to the question of public service broadcasting in the EU than is portrayed by the crude and simplistic assumptions of the diatribes presented by the above authors. This is evident in the decisions, which the Commission has been called upon to adjudicate, where the Commission has overwhelmingly stated that public service broadcasting is something that is acceptable within the competition rules and the terms of the EC Treaty. In this context, while it has been very active in the sphere of the commercial broadcasting sector, it has largely left the issue of state aid and the support of the public service sector to the Member States.
