Isi artikelUntil recently, if you wanted to learn about transsexuality, the prospects were pretty grim. There were a handful of biographies and autobiographies dating from the middle of the 20th century, many of which were quite sensationalist, assorted medical texts and a few underground publications coming out of transsexual communities. As small as this body of work was, it found a passionate readership among people who felt ‘wrong’ in their bodies or displaced in their sex. This situation changed somewhat after Stonewall, but not much. Over the past 30 years the lesbian and gay movement has had mixed relations with trans people. While many US organizations have gestured toward inclusion in recent years, adding a ‘T’ to the (US) standard BGL (Bisexual Gay Lesbian) acronym, real inclusion remains a challenge. Movements for sexual rights have often stopped short of making transgender issues (such as medical care and bathroom access) central to their work and it is still the case in many lesbian and gay organizations that trans people do not feel welcome.
