Stacey and Biblarz caught the attention of researchers by questioning the consistently repeated claim that no significant differences are found when developmental outcome measures of children raised by lesbian/gay parents are compared with those of children raised by heterosexual parents. This claim, they argue, is based upon a ‘highly defensive conceptual framework’ (2001: 159). Scholars are apt to ‘tread gingerly around the terrain of differences’ because a heterosexist ideology continues to dominate the field in the guise of the presumption that heterosexual parenting is the ‘gold standard’ and that any deviation from it marks deficiency (2001: 162).
