Isi artikelFeminist scholarship has produced a series of challenging self-reflective or ‘autocritical’ articles, to use the descriptions of Liz Stanley and Sue Wise, which surely contribute to feminism’s intellectual vividness. However, their article is perhaps not the most fortunate example of autocritique. It relies on a strict division between content and form in order ‘to contribute to a debate about the form that theory takes within feminism’ (2000: 261–2). The authors criticize feminist theory and feminist theorists because they fail to reflect on several contemporary social issues, among them ‘vast increases in women’s familial and economic subservience in former Sovietbloc countries’ (2000: 269). As a feminist historian researching women’s history of Eastern Europe (I would rather use a geographical distinction than the ill-famed Cold War political terminology), I would like to raise two interrelated points: first, to briefly introduce where feminist theory is produced and by whom in Eastern Europe, and second, to provide a concrete example of the relations between feminist theory in Eastern Europe and the ‘theory stars’.
