In ‘But the Empress Has No Clothes! Some Awkward Questions about the “Missing Revolution” in Feminist Theory’ Liz Stanley and Sue Wise encapsulate some of the unease that many feminists, both inside and outside the academy, share about contemporary feminist thinking. In brief, Stanley and Wise coherently argue that although the content of feminist theory may be radical, its epistemology resembles mainstream theory; that feminist theory currently lacks the kind of meta-theoretical thinking that so excited many of us in the early 1970s; and that an elite group of international feminists are creating travelling theory at a remove from the real world. Stanley and Wise’s case is persuasive and one I made myself some time ago in some particulars (Humm, 1993). It is also a case debated vigorously in several issues of the Women’s Studies Network (UK) Association Newsletter (Women’s Studies Network, 1997).
