Transportation systems that rely predominantly on privately owned automobiles are clearly unsustainable, yet the number of such vehicles continues to grow every year. This article explores the causes of this anomaly. The ineffectiveness of “end-of-pipe” solutions to automobile dominance is demonstrated, and more effective strategies are explored. A computer simulation of highway traffic clarifies the fragility of traffic management systems and the inevitability of traffic congestion.
