Under the leadership of President Bashar Al-Assad, the government is seeking to diversify the economic base, putting in place a social market economy with a vibrant business sector. To achieve these aims a reformed higher education sector is seen as a priority by the president. He wishes to see high-quality, relevant education geared to the needs of business and the economy.
