1. This paper is described as "A Quaker perspective" because it is almost impossible for anyone to speak for all the Quakers in the world. This is because of our structure of authorit. Authority resides in the yearly meetings, each of which is autocephalous. There are about eighty-four yearly meetings in the world and they differ from each other considerably.
